Patrick Matthews: Craig wrote all the words on that as well. It sounds like it comes from when he used to sit at home for days on end and never leave his room apart from to get a can of Coke from the fridge. He just used to look out of his window. His backyard isn't as nice as he makes out. You'd think it was this verdant paradise, it's actually just this buzzcut lawn with a fence at the back. He likes it, though. (NME, May 2002)
Patrick Matthews: Something like Autumn Shade, it is almost impossible to make it sound anything like the record. In the guitar solo with the vocals backing it up there are like, four vocal tracks in there and you just can’t do that live. (DTI, April 2003)
Craig Nicholls: We really wanna do that [make "Autumn Shade" or a similar song the fourth single] because it’s part of our thing. I feel pretty confident about us getting to put out one of the ballads. As far as music TV goes, I think "Autumn Shade" or "Country Yard" hold more visual possibilities than the fast tunes. (Joss Hutton Interviews Craig Nicholls in April 2002, DTI, April 2006)
Slip into the autumn shade
I could sleep for days
But I like the sun when
I can hear another sound
It's a long way down
Keep my head up
Who am I to be this way
Dreamin' so insane
But I like the sun when
Falling through another plain
Never one the same
Keep my head up
coming soon
coming soon
