THE VINES- HOT LEATHER / SUN CHILD. IARC-002
RELEASED NOVEMBER 2001
In years to come the artifact you hold in your hand will gain significance as one of the first salvos fired in the battle called The Vines vs. Recorded Music. In this day and age of processed intentions and managed difficulty, it’s refreshing that three guys, some battered instruments and a four track recording machine could sound so exciting.
This is not a case of studied, lo-fi hipsterism by intent. It’s the sound of young guys, who don’t see much sun or hear much beyond what’s on their personal stereos, using whatever minimal technology is at hand to create rocknroll music beyond what most bands could ever conceive in any studio anywhere.
“Hot Leather” is like a bad itch mixed with a sweet tooth, a tightrope walk between melody and malignance. “Sun Child” is a ballad played and sung with such conviction that spines tingle and ears prick anytime it’s in the room. Taken from recordings made by the band, and following the release of similar material by English label XL, these two songs are exclusive to Illustrious Artists and this single is limited to 500 seven inch singles cloaked in a chunky, stylish and hand numbered, cardboard sleeve.
This single is a mere blip on the Vines radar; they got the majors all hot and sweaty and the English Press whispering sweet nothings at the bar. Great things will eventuate in the coming years but if you want to experience ground zero in this remarkable bands ascendance then you’ll acquaint yourself with this fine platter.
Available at all great record stores on Illustrious Artists Records.
