The Vines, who are set to play Glastonbury this weekend, have dismissed claims that they’re the new Nirvana. Speaking to Q, guitarist/vocalist Craig Nicholls said that he was fed up of being compared to Kurt Cobain.
"I realise that people are going to try and make me into this rock‘n’roll figure," declared Nicholls. "Bono. The new Kurt Cobain - I don't compare myself to these guys because to me they're incredibly intelligent - even outside their music."
The Aussie grunger went on say that he thought comparisons to Cobain were unfair due to their radically different upbringings: "I came from a good family. Cobain had a divorced family and he was moved around from home to home a lot, but I stayed in the same house."
However, he did admit that the Nirvana frontman was one of his teenage idols. "When I was in high school, I looked up to Kurt Cobain," he explained. "I wasn't social or outgoing and I didn't understand the teachers. I liked staying at home a lot."
The Vines are playing the Other Stage of the Glastonbury festival on Saturday 29 June. Read the full interview in The Glastonbury Times, Q’s free newspaper available at the festival site.
